With 81,000 people (more in season) living on 1,034 square miles (less after hurricanes), you might wonder if the Keys has a really, really quiet place with totally untouched nature. It does, and it is the Big Pine Area, also referred to as the Lower Keys area. The local Chamber of Commerce calls their area "by far the most unspoiled" islands in America. That may be stretching it, but they are certainly the most unspoiled in the Keys.
Want to build a 400-room hotel? Don't come to the Lower Keys. The locals like it the way it is right now - quiet and untouched. |
